May 3, 2024Hello all! My name is Mary Deyell, I am a third year physical therapy student in the University of California, San Francisco(UCSF)/San Francisco State University (SFSU) joint Doctor of Physical Therapy program. I am so happy to be spending my final clinical rotation here at Beacon! I am currently at the end of my 4th week of 12 total, and have already learned so much from the wonderful staff and all of the people coming in for care that I have been fortunate to work with! Time flies, and I am so appreciative of every moment in this training experience. Below you can learn a little bit more about me, and hopefully I’ll get to meet some of you soon!

What got you interested in Physical Therapy?
Growing up as an athlete, I have always been very fascinated by how the body is able to move and how it is able to return from injury through rehabilitation and exercise. More specifically, when I was 11, my grandmother returned home from a long stay in the hospital and could no longer walk. I watched as a PT came over and provided her with interventions that slowly brought her strength back and she began to regain function and walk again. Seeing the impact that exercise can have on someone, especially as an athlete, I was instantly captivated by this profession!
What area of Physical Therapy interests you?
Currently, I see myself in the outpatient orthopedic setting. I have also spent many years being a tutor in the sciences, and would love to get involved in teaching at some point. Anatomy and physiology has always been my favorite subject!
What are your favorite recreational activities?
I enjoy playing ice hockey, pickleball, running, hiking, and going to the gym with my friends. I have a large passion for sports and love to be active!
What is your favorite form of exercise that you do right now?
One of my favorite forms of exercise is ice hockey. I get to play every Sunday in an adult league in the city, where I have made such great friends. I played NCAA DIII ice hockey in college, and when I moved to SF ~3 years ago, I was very fortunate to find out I live only a mile from the closest rink!
Mary will be helping out with treatments throughout her clinical rotation here, so please welcome her to the team when you see her!
