Most people are not aware that pelvic floor physical therapy even exists, let alone that it can be really useful to help treat a variety of bowel, bladder, and sexual dysfunctions. And even more often, people think pelvic floor physical therapy is strictly for post-pregnancy recovery. We at Beacon Physical Therapy are here to debunk those myths and inform you that men can also benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy!

This might sound really obvious, but everyone with a pelvis also has pelvic floor muscles, this includes individuals of both biological sexes, and all gender identities. A variety of different symptoms can manifest in this region, and some common issues seen in males include testicular, groin, or penile pain, urinary incontinence, issues following a prostatectomy, pudendal neuralgia, pain with sexual activity, tailbone pain, and many more. These symptoms can be very personal, sometimes uncomfortable to talk about, and extremely frustrating to deal with. Luckily, a pelvic floor physical therapist can help with the rehabilitation and management of these symptoms.

A pelvic floor physical therapist can help identify musculoskeletal sources of your symptoms both locally to your pelvic floor and globally to other areas of your body that might be contributing to the dysfunction. Do you have chronic low back pain that’s never been resolved, numbness or tingling down the legs, or hip pain? These can all be symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. Even neck pain and shoulder pain can be symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. Many of us are dealing with stress and anxiety due to work, the pandemic, etc., which can create pelvic floor dysfunction.

Treatment involves in-depth education, manual therapy, and therapeutic exercise to improve your symptoms. If you suspect you have a pelvic floor dysfunction, or chronic, unresolved pain in other parts of the body that may be pelvic floor related, contact us at Beacon Physical therapy for evaluation and treatment.

At Beacon Physical Therapy, we support our patients in leading a healthy life and establishing a healthy lifestyle. We’d love to meet you and get you back to doing what you love.
