Prioritizing self-care, whatever that means to you
December 23, 2021New Year, New You?
January 8, 2022At the time we are writing, climate legislation is stalling in the senate and the sustainability of our planet appears to be irreversibly on a downward spiral from our human actions. If you find this deeply concerning, and want to know what you might be able to do about it, this post is for you! Whether or not you like the idea of setting resolutions this time of year, some of you might consider channeling your resolution energy into the following tips. Some of these things you might be doing, some of it might be new. Join us here at Beacon Physical Therapy as we ring in the New Year with some collective climate action!

Tip 1: Step up your composting game
- Not all of you participate in city-wide composting. But if you do live in the greater Bay Area or somewhere with green bins, there might be more that you could be composting than you realize (e.g., pizza boxes!).
- If you are feeling a little green in the thumbs, learn how to start home composting. It’s a fun way to do your part, and also benefit your own garden soil.
- Go shopping. No, for real, check out farmer’s markets because local farms use the compost we produce.
Tip 2. Change your relationship with power
- The next time a bulb blows, switch to LED. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy has determined that out of CFLs, incandescent, and LED bulbs, LED bulbs are the most environmentally friendly.
- We all switch things on out of habit. Try putting a sticky note over the wall switch as a reminder to ask yourself: do I really need this on right now?
- Check for ENERGY STAR® labeling when you are making purchases. It’s the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency (i.e., using less energy to get the same job done – and in the process, cutting energy bills and reducing pollution).
Tip. 3. Make a small change, even once per week.
- Change up your commute. That could mean carpooling, telecommuting on a high-traffic day, biking, or even walking one way. Biking every day might seem like a big shift, but what if it was only once a week?
- Ruminant meat has a negative impact on our environment. If you eat red meat, consider a day a week (doesn’t have to be Monday) where you eat with an eye toward the planet.
- Give eco-friendly gifts. For that friend who has everything, try gifting some laundry detergent sheets, reusable baggies or a cool solar lighting device.
The health of our planet directly effects our health, both mentally and physically. Let’s move together into the new year, working together to create a better future for everyone. Again, even small things can make a big difference.
