Psoas 101: What is it, how you can stretch it and why it’s important
June 17, 2021Do toddlers actually think about engaging their abdominal muscles before they pick up a toy?
June 25, 2021If you’re just doing “corrective exercises” but aren’t correcting anything else, how do you expect to get better?
Doing corrective exercises without correcting other issues is something physical therapists see quite often, especially with neck and back pain.
But it’s certainly not limited to these two issues. As physical therapists we address soft tissue restrictions and joint restrictions, we re-educate the body on a neuromuscular level, and give home corrective exercises to further hold any mobilizations we did in session. We also educate our patients on the importance of sitting and standing posture, including home and office set up, and proper movement patterns. You do your home corrective exercises, you take Pilates classes to strengthen your core, and workout to strengthen your glutes, but then you go home and slump on the couch and watch TV for 3 hours or sit at your desk all day with rounded shoulders and a forward head.
Tom Meyers said, “You have one hour with your patient to fix them, and they have 167 hours to screw up everything you just fixed before their next session.” Even if you’re diligent about doing your corrective exercises at home and taking additional classes to strengthen your body, if you’re not combining it with proper postural and movement patterns throughout your day, chances are you will still be in pain.
Strength and mobility will only get you so far. You need to change your postural patterns and your movement patterns as well, otherwise the body will go back to what it knows. By all means, do your home exercises, you will make every PT extremely happy, but you can’t forget about your posture and movement patterns as you go through your daily life.
Learn to sit, stand and move correctly and more efficiently. Learn how and why we should sit and stand in proper posture. It’s definitely NOT what you’ve learned from TV and magazines. DM us for any and all questions. Beacon PT is having a 50% off telehealth sale for the month of July!
