Starting a workout regimen? Here are some ways to avoid injuries
December 31, 2020Got knee pain when you run? Check your ankle mobility
January 14, 2021You get up, you work out, you go about your day. Wash, rinse, repeat. Maybe you are wondering if there is something more. We have good news! There is. It’s called goal setting!
Goal setting, i.e., picking something you want to achieve and then setting manageable steps to achieve it, applies to many things in life – but it especially applies to fitness!
Setting fitness goals can be big (running a marathon) or small (running a mile). The great news is, it’s up to you! If you want to hop off the boring routine of just working out and start training toward something, this is your year.
Here’s how to get your fitness goals in motion. Read on:
Set a goal
The first step of goal setting is to…set a goal! Aim high but also, think of the little steps along the way. So, if your goal is to run a mile, think about all the little things that will get you there. Start by walking 20 minutes a day three days a week. Then bump it up. Don’t just randomly go and try to run. Break it down into pieces.
Have a plan
Once you set your goal and break it into steps, plan for your success. Put reminders in your phone calendar. Write your goal on a piece of paper and stick it to your fridge. Tell people about it – or post about it on social media. Make a plan for success. After all, if you don’t have a goal, why are you exercising? What is motivating you?
Be mindful
Simply going to the gym and picking up some dumbbells to do some random exercises isn’t being mindful. It’s boring and wastes your time, meaning you won’t enjoy it – or make progress. Same with sitting on the exercise bike or treadmill, mindlessly moving your legs while zoning out to a TV show.
Be mindful when you exercise. Breathe, focus and challenge yourself. Don’t use the same intensity or resistance. If you do this, and it’s your only form of exercise – that’s fine. But you won’t make progress or get results.
